ADVICE FOR PARENTS ON HOW TO WRITE THE PERFECT LETTER TO YOUR KIDS WHILE THEY ARE AT SLEEPAWAY CAMP

As a parent, you already know that sleepaway camp is a great way for your child to form new friendships, boost their confidence and self-esteem, and have a great time away from home.

Unfortunately, a little homesickness may be inevitable, especially for first time campers.

If your child is nervous about leaving home, a good way to put their mind at ease is by sending them hand-written letters. This lets them know you’re thinking about them while they’re away on their adventures at summer camp.

Here are a few pointers on how to write the perfect letter:

1) Tell your child you’re proud of them for trying new things and for being independent. Especially for first-time campers, it can be really reassuring to hear this from Mom and Dad.

2) Doing things out of the ordinary is a fun and easy way to make receiving a letter much more fun. This includes using multicolored pens or markers, silly envelopes, or funny/cool stickers.

3) Encourage them to set goals during their time at camp such as having fun every day, learning a skill they didn’t have, and making some new friends.

4) Another fun idea is to write a letter from the perspective of the family pet. Kids do not only miss their parents! Getting a letter from their beloved cat or dog will surely put a smile on their face,

5) Give simple updates that are positive and encouraging, and try not to give the illusion that home is just not the same without them.

6) Have each member of the family include a short message. The more the merrier!

7) You could also include jokes, riddles and brain teasers. These will help stimulate your child’s mind and is something they can share with the other kids and camp counselors.

8) Share with them the latest family news so they do not feel like they are fully missing out on “home life” while they are away.

And on the flipside, it is just as exciting for the parents to receive a letter from their child. You’ll love seeing your child’s handwriting when you open your mailbox – and it will put your mind at ease when you read about how much fun they are having and all the new adventures they are experiencing. To increase your chances of actually receiving a letter from your child, encourage your camper by sending them to camp with fun stationary, envelopes, stickers, and multi colored pens.

Writing letters just might be one of the best ways to tell your camper how much you love and care about them, so go ahead – Write away, right away! :)
